Covid Update

Unfortunately the Children's Gardening Club will not be running for the 2020 season

The tourists enjoyed a wonderful week based in Torquay. Leaving in torrential rain, we could only hope for better weather ahead. By the time we reached Haynes Motor Museum for a welcome break, blue skies surrounded us.

Our opening match was against Babbacombe Bowls Club. An unpredictable green gave the home team an advantage, winning the match 106 - 54. Our only success came from Shirley and Terry.

Wednesday was a rest day for the tourists, giving them the opportunity to visit Brixham or Babbacombe Model Village. Time was taken for a competitive round of Crazy Golf. We held our own Indoor Long Mat Competition with Cathy, Carol and Ted winning the Glass Bowl.

The next match was at Teignmouth Bowls Club. We were given a warm welcome at The Den. A close match with the hosts winning by 116 - 107. However, Sherfield won 4 and drew 1 of the 7 rinks.

Our final match was at Yeovil Bowls Club on the journey home. Again, a closely fought match, Yeovil winning 80 - 67. Congratulations to Colin, Geoff, Janice and Jenny H winning their match 18 -14.

Many thanks to Jenny H for organising the tour. It was definitely a trip where the results didn’t really matter!

Sherfield English welcomed Timber Trundlers Bowling Association for a friendly match. The Trundlers are a unique touring team, travelling to various clubs to play matches using antique, wooden bowls made of extremely heavy Lignum Vitae wood which was phased out in the 1950s.

Mixed Fours were played on each rink, with a total of 48 players. All matches a balance of humour and serious play.

Sherfield English won 109 - 82, keeping their impressive winning run going into the Torquay Tour.  We look forwards to welcoming the Trundlers back in 2027.

Final Result:

Rink 1:   Lost   8 - 13   All square until a bad run of losing ends

Rink 2:   Won  26 - 5    A comfortable win for the home team

Rink 3:   Won  16 - 9   A good contest throughout

Rink 4:   Lost   16 - 19   An unlucky defeat for the home team

Rink 5:  Won    20 - 14   A good string of winning ends earned a win

Rink 6:  Won.  23 - 20.  Closely fought match right to the end.

With play due to start, a vicious hailstorm covered the green with a coat of white. Players rushed for cover in the changing rooms, bus shelters and even the equipment shed! Conditions improved and the match, shortened to 16 ends, took place. Thankfully the sun shone for the majority of our return match against Twyford Bowls Club. The damp conditions slowed the woods down and players found it difficult to adjust in the opening few ends. Sherfield took advantage and were early leaders in two of the three rinks. As the match drew to a close, Sherfield were comfortably in front in all three rinks. Well played Team Sherfield! The unbeaten run continues..next the Timber Trundlers…

Final Result:

Rink 3:   Won 18 -11 Always in the lead and result never in doubt

Rink 4:   Won 21- 9   An easy victory, result of the day.
