Bowls England have published guidelines for playing outdoor bowls in extreme weather conditions - heat.

9th July, 2026

Issued: June 2026

Outdoor bowls is usually played during the hottest months of the year. Everyone involved should consider the risks of playing, spectating or officiating in hot, sunny or humid conditions.

Whilst we cover Inclement Weather within Appendix F of the Bowls England Rules and Regulations and have issued guidance on this topic in the past, this document provides additional support to guide affiliated clubs, counties and associated organisations given the current extreme weather that we are experiencing across England.

It is designed to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants. Decisions regarding playing conditions due to inclement weather should always prioritise player welfare.

Sherfield English v Chelmsford District, Bowls Match 16/07/26
Sherfield English v Chelmsford District, Bowls Match 16/07/26

We were honoured to host Chelmsford Bowls Association as part of their bowling tour itinerary. Formed in 1945, the Association is made up of clubs from Chelmsford and surrounding area.

They travelled from Bournemouth and arrived punctually. The first task was to raise their flag on the pole. Smartly dressed in all white with neck ties, the men and women gathered on the green. After an introduction by the President, they were given permission to remove their ties…it was a hot afternoon!

Cream teas were enjoyed half way through the match, thank you to Jenny and Darryl for organising.

The match restarted and the 6 rinks were shared 3 - 3 at the end of the match. Totalling the scorecards, Sherfield English narrowly lost by 10

Everyone really enjoyed the afternoon and Chelmsford entertained us to the end with a choral song!  Sherfield English cannot thank them enough for their generosity and sportsmanship.

Final Result: Sherfield English 92 - 102 Chelmsford B.C.A

Rink 1:    Won 20 - 9     Result never in doubt.

Rink 3:    Lost 8 - 26.     Scores even at the tea break,……

Rink 4:    Won 21 - 10.   Another excellent team performance

Rink 5:    Won 25 - 9.     Great result, never behind in the match

Sherfield English travelled to Downton for the return fixture hoping to get back to winning ways. The match started at 6pm and, due to the heat, was shortened to 16 ends.

A slow start for Sherfield English but as each rink progressed, the away team kept their composure. The match result was shared, with each team winning 2 rinks. The points were added up and each team had 51 points. A recount and scrutiny of the scorecards ensured a narrow victory for Sherfield English by 1 point!

Downton were genial hosts and good sports. Thanks were given for the after match refreshments and Sherfield English travelled back home with another win under their belt.

Final Result: Sherfield English 52 - 51 Downton
