Sherfield English Bowls match Southbourne V SE, 07/08/26

For the second consecutive year we travelled to Southbourne Bowls Club for a friendly match.  We met at the Clubhouse for an early lunch.

Once again, they were the perfect hosts with their generosity and hospitality. In perfect playing conditions, the hosts won by 3.5 rinks to 1.5.  Although outplayed, Sherfield never gave up and were good sports till the end.

Final Result: Sherfield English 69  - 106 Southbourne

Rink 1:           Won    22 – 14           With the game tied 11-11 after 13 ends out of 18, Sherfield scored 11 unanswered points to win comfortably. Congratulations to Carol, Jenny M and Ted.

Rink 2:           Lost.   8 – 20             Never really in the game.

Rink 3:           Draw   17 – 17           An epic battle between two evenly matched teams. Sherfield needed 3 on the last two ends to draw.  Well done Bernie, David D and Jenny M.

Rink 4:           Lost    15 - 29.           Sherfield found their rhythm and length after the tea break, making the score look more respectful.

Rink 5:           Lost     7 - 26.             Again, Southbourne took hold of game early on.

Eric Chase, first winner of the 1947 Heifer Bowling Cup, Sherfield English v Whiteparish

Our annual ‘Heifer Cup’ match took place on a warm afternoon, perfect for bowls. The Heifer Cup was donated by local farmer, Eric Chase, to become an annual competitive match between members living in Sherfield and members in Whiteparish and the wider locality. Eric, as a young farmer, won the Cup in 1946 and it was inscribed “Winner: The Silver Cup” and now also “Winners of the Inter-Village Competition.”

Eric, passed away three years ago, and was represented by his daughter, Hillary, who presented the Cup to the winning team.…..

4 triples matches were played, making a total of 24 members. Whiteparish were welcomed and given the jack as the away team. During the early stage of the match, two rinks were evenly matched. Both Sherfield and Whiteparish had a commanding lead in one match each and at the halfway stage the score was 2 rinks each.

The match continued with the same pattern until the latter stages, when Sherfield took hold, winning 3 rinks to 1.

A match played in good spirit throughout, though elation and disappointment were evident.

Final Result: Sherfield English 72 - 54 Whiteparish

Rink 1:    Sherfield     16 - 15    A close game right to the end when the final wood, after a measure, ensured victory for the home team.

Rink 2:    Sherfield     19 - 12    A final flourish by Sherfield in the final ends of the match, scoring 12 points without answer, won the match.

Rink 3:    Sherfield.     27 - 7    An emphatic victory, excellent team play

Rink 4:    Whiteparish 20 - 11.  9 points on the last four ends made a respectable score for the home team. Excellent win for Whiteparish.
