Covid Update

Unfortunately the Children's Gardening Club will not be running for the 2020 season

Rain, rain and more rain have had a severe impact on our ability to host football matches over the last month, and have delayed the start of the next phase of the drainage operation. We’re still on track, though at the mercy of the elements somewhat, but this spell of soggy weather has certainly provided an excellent reminder of why it is so important to get this work completed.

The lighting situation at the tennis courts has now been resolved, and the Sherfield English netball club has been the first recipient of its benefits. We’ve also managed to upgrade the pavilion lighting, so no more tricky moments of darkness looking for the door! We’re grateful to everyone who has helped us get these jobs done, and very much to Nick Adams-King, who we understand has provided a grant to the netball club to help with the installation costs.

We’ve still further exciting developments planned for 2026 so watch this space. Cricket will be starting again in the late spring and the number of football clubs using our facilities continues to grow. With that in mind it’s worth mentioning that the SEFC Ladies Teams are still recruiting for new members. We can’t recommend it enough as this is a chance to experience a great camaraderie and benefit from expert coaching.

Formed just two years ago, Sherfield English Football Club (SEFC) has already made an impressive start to life in local football. In this short time, the club has achieved league promotion and lifted a cup final trophy, building a strong and promising reputation within the local footballing leagues.

SEFC is more than just a football club. It is a welcoming place for everyone – a club to call home. At its heart, the club prides itself on being one big family, offering players, supporters, and volunteers a place to enjoy football, forget daily worries, and feel part of something special within the community.

Chairmen Sam and Rhys are committed to continuing the club’s positive growth. What began as a single men’s Saturday team has quickly expanded to include a men’s Reserves side and a Ladies Sunday League team managed by Mickey Lovell. The men’s teams currently compete in the Southampton District League, while the ladies represent the club in the Hampshire leagues. Progression remains firmly on the agenda. Plans are already underway to further expand next season, with the introduction of a Ladies Reserves side and an

additional men’s team, either a Thirds or an Under-23 Development squad.

As a local grassroots club, SEFC understands the financial challenges involved in running community football. Costs this season alone have been significant, and the club would welcome the support of local businesses wishing to become part of the SEFC family. Sponsorship opportunities are available, including pitch-side advertising boards, with all supporters and sponsors promoted across the club’s social media platforms.

The club would also love to see more local residents supporting the men’s team on Saturday afternoons and the Ladies team on a Sunday afternoon. A great deal of time and effort has gone into building Sherfield English Football Club, and there are no plans to slow down its growth any time soon. After delays due to the weather we are hoping to complete the drainage works during February which will be welcomed by all, especially the football teams and not least the parents of the children soaked on the trampoline in the playground.

Sherfield FC men’s and women’s teams go from strength to strength, and we are all very proud of their achievements so far. Please pop over on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon and join the growing crowd to give them a cheer. Sherfield English Netball club plays on Monday and Wednesday evenings and is run by the lovely Helen Stockting. If you are interested in joining in or simply finding out more and perhaps having a trial session, please call Helen on 07702 071969. All levels including complete beginners will be made to feel very welcome.

TENNIS - The netball is played on the hard courts which have previously

also been used for tennis. Demand fell and currently no tennis takes place at all. SERP are happy to possibly make the investment needed to update the nets etc. but we would like to know how much, if any, interest there is. Please contact us on the mail or number below to let us know if you would like to use the courts either for occasional use or for tennis training or practise.

CRICKET is returning to the village! Whiteparish Cricket Club is a thriving club with several teams, and the third team will be playing throughout the season on Saturday afternoons in Sherfield English.

NEWS FROM THE PAVILLION

We are a small charity with a hardworking committee striving to make the facilities as relevant and modern as possible. As you will appreciate funding is a constant concern, but we are hoping to make some important changes and possible refurbishments and are working towards applying for various grants to assist with the cost. We would very much like to have the feedback from parishioners as to what you think we should prioritise. Please get in touch, we’d love to hear from you.
